For most international visitors flying in from New Zealand, Australia, the USA or the UK, however, Nadi is the straightforward choice.
From New Zealand to Taveuni

New Zealand is the closest major gateway to Taveuni and, for most New Zealanders, Fiji is a well-worn route. The difference with Taveuni is that you add a domestic connection in Nadi. Allow a full day of travel — and ideally plan to overnight in Nadi if your international flight arrives late in the afternoon.

From Australia to Taveuni

Australia has the strongest direct connections to Nadi of any departure market — with flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth. This makes the Nadi connection point straightforward, and Fiji is a well-established holiday destination for Australians. The additional domestic leg to Taveuni adds time but is a simple and reliable connection.

From the United States to Taveuni
Total: 18–24 hrs travel time
For American travellers, Taveuni is a genuine adventure — a remote and beautiful destination that most Fiji visitors never reach. The journey is longer than a standard holiday flight, but Fiji Airways makes the routing surprisingly clean from the US West Coast. And for divers in particular, the payoff is extraordinary: Rainbow Reef and the Great White Wall are among the finest dive sites on the planet, virtually unknown to American travellers compared to the Caribbean or Hawaii.
The good news for US travellers is that Fiji Airways flies direct from Los Angeles to Nadi daily — on an Airbus A350, with business class available. The flight time from Los Angeles to Nadi is approximately 11 hours and 5 minutes, covering roughly 5,522 miles. Nadi sits a day ahead of US time zones, which takes a little adjustment but means you arrive in Fiji the following morning, ready to connect.

Nadi has good accommodation options near the airport for one-night stopovers. The Sheraton Fiji, Sofitel Fiji, and Doubletree by Hilton are all within 15–20 minutes of the airport.

Book the LAX–NAN leg directly through Fiji Airways (fijiairways.com) and add the domestic Nadi–Matei connection in the same booking so you get the full baggage allowance. A note on the time difference:
Fiji is UTC+12. From the US West Coast, Fiji is 19–21 hours ahead depending on daylight saving. You depart Los Angeles on, say, a Tuesday night and arrive in Fiji on Thursday morning. The date line crossing catches many travellers off guard — factor it into your travel planning and be precise with your accommodation check-in dates.
From the UK and Europe to Taveuni
Total: 26–32 hrs travel time
For British and European travellers, Fiji is a genuine long-haul destination — but one with remarkable routing options. The journey is long, but the flexibility of connections via Los Angeles, Sydney, Tokyo, or Hong Kong means you can often break the trip into comfortable segments. Many UK travellers treat the outbound or return leg as an opportunity for a stopover in Sydney or Los Angeles.

The LAX routing is popular with UK travellers. The shortest flight time from London to Nadi via Los Angeles is approximately 24 hours and 30 minutes. British Airways or American Airlines fly LHR to LAX, connecting to the Fiji Airways overnight LAX–NAN service.

Arriving at Matei Airport
Matei Airport (IATA: TVU) is one of the most endearing airports in the Pacific. It is small, open-air, and entirely unhurried. There is no jet bridge, no baggage carousel, and no queue — your bags are unloaded onto a trolley and brought to you on the apron. The whole arrival process takes about ten minutes.
The runway sits on a strip of land between the ocean and the rainforest, with views across to Vanua Levu on clear days. If you have been travelling for 24 hours from the other side of the world, stepping off the plane into warm Fijian air with a view like this is a significant moment.
Is it worth the journey?
That depends on what you are looking for. If you want a beach resort with a swim-up bar and a kids' club within walking distance of the airport, Taveuni is not the right choice. If you want some of the world's finest diving, a private clifftop home with a pool and 190-degree views over the Somosomo Strait, and the feeling that you have genuinely escaped — then yes, it is absolutely worth the journey.
The visitors who come to Ucuilagi tend to be experienced travellers who have already done the standard Fiji trip and want something different. They are divers who have heard about Rainbow Reef and the Great White Wall and want to stay as close to those sites as possible. They are families who want a whole house, a private pool, and space to spread out without being surrounded by other guests. They are couples looking for privacy and quiet.
